We were all so excited to start our homeschool year back up again! Ada and I had been so successful for almost 3 years now and I’ve been so eager to really dive in with all three kids this year.
First, a little back story…
When Ada was of preschool age, Jay and I researched the best private pre-k programs in our area. We ended up touring and really loving a popular Christian Private School and enrolled her the same day. When the school year started, Ada was thriving. She came home every day and would tell us all about her day, about to burst with excitement. She joined cheer, we were involved in every event, we were so ecstatic that things were going so well and were talking about registering her there for Kindergarten. Then halfway through the year, her teacher advanced to an amazing new position and a new teacher took her place. There was a complete change in Ada’s day. She wasn’t racing to run out the door to school in the mornings, she didn’t talk about her day. My sweet little 4 year old with a heart for learning seemed to be so unenthused and we knew we needed to do something about it. Other classrooms were full, as was the magnet program, so a friends of mine encouraged me to try homeschooling.
I am sure my thoughts were similar to a lot of you- “I don’t think I can homeschool”, “I doubt my strong willed daughter will listen”, “I’m not organized, I can’t lesson plan” and the list of self doubt went on and on. My girlfriend told me to swallow those doubts and told me that I COULD do this, and she was right. And I think God everyday that she was in my life at that moment in time because here we are today, loving every minute of homeschooling. It is the best decision we could have made for our family!
If I’m being honest, though, thinking about homeschooling Ada (2nd) and Grey (PreSchool) and having Wes join in on what we are doing was completely overwhelming for me to think about! I really needed to get some help and decided to begin to really dive into a good curriculum. One suggestion I received that I really enjoyed reading about was Sonlight. I love that it made Bible time a part of each day, that all of the subjects are so organized in how they’re placed into the binder and that every lesson is planned out for me!
Sonlight has really helped make the start to this year of homeschooling three such a beautiful beginning!
One thing I always tell people about WHY I love to homeschool is because I love having freedom! With us not having any family nearby, we are always traveling and taking fun tips! I keep all of our lessons for the week organized in a large bin and I am then able to teach my kids all over the world! The best part? No having to deal with the trouble of my kids missing 5 days away from a classroom!
I am so looking forward to taking you all on this journey with us this year as we share a little about what we are doing with Sonlight! We will be doing at least one post a month, so be sure to keep an eye out!
