Building Castles and Adventure Dreams

As you may know by now, we are a homeschool family. It was something that I never thought I could do until my friend Jackie over at Raising Cubs convinced my to try it while Ada was in preschool. So we pulled her out of her prestigious private pre-k program and gave it a go. Guess what? All of my fears of not being able to homeschool my strong willed daughter faded away within the first two weeks, I was astounded! She went from learning letter sounds in her classroom to being able to read and write over 60 words within a week. Now here we are, a year into this homeschool journey and she is doing so well. Reading at a first grade level, telling time, loving addition and subtraction and so much more. She is amazing. On nice days we are able to go to the park for a break to play, we can go on scavenger hunts, we can use outdoor materials and chalk to practice her addition and subtraction. When we have some time available to take a drive down to FL, we can take off and go and use our surroundings there to create our lessons, such as writing words in the sand and counting seashells.

Lately, we have been bombarded with rainy day after rainy day. Rather than have the opportunity to get outside, we are spending our days inside. But that’s okay too! We find ways to have fun while we take breaks from our lessons. Just because we are taking a break from lessons to play, doesn’t mean we halt the education! I’ve decided to start a series here where I will begin sharing my favorite toys that encourage learning through play.

Lately we have been beating rainy day boredom with some of our favorite products from Best Choice Products ! They carry a HUGE variety of products, but we just love the children’s products they have to offer. Ada and Grey both use the Building Magnet Tiles set just about every day! With Grey, we practice learning colors and shapes and with Ada she learns to put the shapes together to build a sturdy structure. They are great for quiet time and concentration and the two of them share them so nicely!

Our other favorite is the Illuminated World Globe! Ada has always had a love of learning about other places and cultures and this just makes it fun. We learn about a new country every month and last month was Brazil and she went upstairs to grab her globe to show me where it was. My clever little 5 year old sat there looking at every country trying to sound each one out until she found it! I was so proud. She will often point to a new location and ask me what it is and how far it is and what language they speak. She has such a thirst for learning, I love it! When I tell her about a new place I like to pick her brain to ask her what things she might like to eat there, what she would wear there, what she would like to see. So many people don’t realize how many ways everyday items can be used to keep our children learning. She also uses it as a night light in her room. She can’t sleep without it!

What else would you like me to share on our homeschool life? I’ve created a new tab, just to share all of our fun learning related content!
